Ascension Seton Named Official Medical Provider

As Official Medical Provider, Ascension Seton to focus on participant well-being

High Five Events announces Ascension Seton as the Official Medical Provider of the 17th annual Jack’s Generic Triathlon. Ascension Seton and their experienced team will have an on-course presence throughout the event. They will have a tent near the finish line. Jack’s Generic Tri will take place on Sunday, August 25th, at Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park in Austin.

“Ascension Seton is proud to support Jack’s Generic Triathlon as the Official Medical Provider,” said Adam Bauman, vice president, orthopedics & sports performance, Ascension Seton. “We are excited to expand our partnership to include not only our running community, but also our cyclists and swimmers in this great race.”

As the Official Medical Provider, Ascension Seton doctors and nurses will work together with Travis County EMS to focus on participant’s well-being. Ascension Seton is part of the largest nonprofit health system in the U.S. and the world’s largest Catholic health system. They’ve expanded their Austin footprint, partnering with the Austin Marathon and Austin Bold FC.

“One of Jack’s Generic Tri’s main focuses is the participant, from their overall experience to their safety,” said Jack Murray, co-owner of High Five Events. “Our growing partnership with Ascension Seton ensures the well-being of our participants continues to be the highest of priorities.”

Jack’s Generic Triathlon will begin at 7:30 a.m. It will feature a 600m swim, 11.2-mile bike ride, and a 5K. The aquabike will consist of a 600m swim and 11.2-mile bike ride. Relay teams of two or three can complete all three disciplines. Jack’s Generic Tri was created 17 years ago with the participant in mind and is well-known as one of the more participant-friendly triathlons. Registration is open for Jack’s Generic Triathlon. Volunteer positions are available as well.

Each participant receives a commemorative 17th Anniversary shirt, water bottle, and swim cap. They will earn a finisher’s medal, post-race food and beer, and the signature swag toss. Professional timing, a wonderful volunteer crew, hundreds of supportive spectators, and an electric finish line festival will ensure the 17th Anniversary of Jack’s Generic Triathlon is one to remember.

If you didn’t know, Walter E Long Metropolitan Park is home to Jack’s Generic Triathlon!

Walter E Long Metropolitan Park is located at 6614 Blue Bluff Road. Lake Walter E. Long (aka Decker Lake) spans 1,200 acres and features open spaces for boating, jet skis, fishing, and swimming. Visitors can also take advantage of two sand volleyball courts, picnic sites, tables, and grills. There are also hiking, running, and biking trails. Restrooms are available throughout the park. Locate parking, picnic sites, and various amenities with this interactive Google Map!

Pro tip: practice open water swimming before Rookie Tri and Jack’s Generic Tri. Stick to the designated swimming areas. Avoid the no swimming area by the boat ramp.

Boating and fishing are the most popular recreational uses of the lake. Fish present in Lake Walter E. Long include catfish, largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, and sunfish.

  • Pay stations should be used for all Day Use Entry for entry when a cashier is unavailable or after hours

Payment method: credit cards and coins will be accepted at the park entry area automated pay stations.  Cash is NOT accepted for park entry fees.

Divisions at Jack’s Generic Triathlon Explained

Jack’s Generic Triathlon consists of a 600m swim, 11.2-mile bike ride, and 5K run. Understand the different divisions offered so you participate against athletes like yourself! Every participant, regardless of their division, will receive the same sweet perks and have access to the finish line festival.

Open

Participants are encouraged to enter the open wave if they expect to finish in the top 50. This wave will begin first. Participants in the open wave will not be eligible for age group awards or USAT rankings. The open division exists so that participants who are interested in competing head-to-head, regardless of age, may do so. This allows the age group waves to be more friendly. Awards are given to top 3 male and female for the Open Division.

Athena/Clydesdale

Introduced by High Five Events in 2018, the inclusion of these two divisions introduced triathlon to new participants and created more energy and competition on race day. Participants in the Athena (165+ lbs.) or Clydesdale (220+ lbs.) Divisions are separated according to body weight instead of age group. Participants must select Athena or Clydesdale during registration. It is not required. Awards are given to top 3 female and male for the Athena/Clydesdale Divisions.

Aquabike

Take all the fun of triathlon and subtract the run, you’ve got Aquabike! Aquabikers complete the 600m swim and the 11.2-mile bike. Once they enter transition they’re done and their time stops. Participants can either cross the finish line at their own pace or they can head straight to the finish line festival to get the party started. Awards are given to top 3 male and female for the Aquabike Divisions.

Relays

Relay teams can consist of two or three members. This makes JGT two or three times the fun! Gather friends or family and make it a competition. Or challenge another department in your office. Relay team members will rack together. This means all of your items will be in the same location, as if you were completing the triathlon solo. Team members will wait in the relay pen near the rack. Their team member will return their items (swim gear or bike) to the rack and then meet the next team member in the pen to exchange the chip. Awards are given to the top 3 relay teams.

Volunteering for Jack’s Generic Triathlon is anything but generic. You support hundreds of triathletes who’ve spent countless hours training. This is a great way to give back to the sport you love and get a front-row seat to watching friends and family. Then, we’ll celebrate your efforts at Z’Tejas (1110 W. 6th St. – date/time TBD) for the official volunteer party! We’re getting excited right now just thinking about their scrumptious southwestern food and delicious drinks.

If you’re participating on Sunday, Aug. 25th, you can volunteer before race day. Not participating in the event? Lend your time and energy to hundreds of triathletes! There are early morning shifts, opportunities during the race, and time slots during breakdown if you’re not an -early birds. Sign up for a shift during the event if you want to be right in the action where you can cheer and volunteer.

Race-day volunteers are fed and hydrated. There are snacks and cold drinks throughout the day. If you’re there in the morning you’ll get breakfast tacos and coffee! In addition to all of the above, volunteers get a sweet, custom shirt.

Don’t forget: this is event #3 of the Texas Tri Series. You’ve volunteered or participated in Rookie Triathlon and CapTex Tri. Once you complete JGT, Kerrville Triathlon is the only event left on your calendar!

16th Annual Jack’s Generic Triathlon Memorable

On Sunday, August 26th, nearly 700 triathletes participated in the 16th Annual Jack’s Generic Triathlon (JGT) at Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park in northeast Austin. Spectators came from around Central Texas to cheer on friends and loved ones. The Drunk Athlete Podcast Relay Team featuring Ricky Berens, 2x Olympic gold medalist, Andrew Willis, national champion ultra cyclist, and Cate Barrett, 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials hopeful, lived up to the hype with a scorching time of 56:11.16th annual Jack's Generic Tri featured a unicorn!

“This was fun, even better because I didn’t have to bike or run!” said Berens, who finished the 600m open water swim in a blazing seven minutes and 58 seconds. “Thanks to High Five Events for a great event and to the Drunk Athlete Podcast for assembling an awesome relay team with Andrew and Cate.”

Peter Murray took the overall victory with the time of 57:15. Second and third place overall featured a sprint to the finish. Pablo Gomez (58:27) narrowly edged out Adrian Cameron (58:28). Haley Koop (1:06:14) was the first female to cross the finish line . Second place finisher Brandi Swicegood (1:08:51) and third place finisher Brandi Ruthven (1:10:51) rounded out the women’s field. All participants cooled off from the Texas heat underneath a 6-foot tall inflatable unicorn that sprayed water.

“As always, JGT was a great race and the 16th anniversary was well-organized by High Five Events,” said Gomez. “I look forward to this race every year because of the excitement, energy, and competition. I especially loved the Sweet 16 cake!”

Jack’s Generic Triathlon Celebrates Sweet 16 this Sunday

Sweet 16 to feature super relay team consisting of an Olympic gold medalist, ultra cycling champion, Olympic Marathon Trials hopeful

The 2018 triathlon season continues with Jack’s Generic Triathlon’s Sweet 16. The event will take place this Sunday, August 26th, at Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park in northwest Austin. More than 800 participants will participate in the 16th edition of this beloved Central Texas race, including Ricky Berens, 2x Olympic gold medalist, former University of Texas swimmer, and world record holder in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.

“I’m very excited to be competing, honestly pretty nervous!” said Berens, swim member of Drunk Athlete Relay Team. “This will be my first time ‘competing’ in five years and in a much different environment. I have swum in open water before, but never in an actual race. I’m just going to do my best to not let my teammates down and see how fast I can go!”

Berens’ Drunk Athlete teammates for JGT’s sweet 16 include: Andrew Willis, owner of Holland Racing, national champion ultra cyclist, 2018 24 hours in the Canyon champion (pedaled 448 miles at the World Ultra Cycling Association’s National Championship), and Cate Barrett, former Baylor University runner, current coach and runner for Rogue Running, 2017 Orange Leaf Half Marathon female champion (1:25:18), training for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials. All athletes have been featured on the Austin-based Drunk Athlete podcast.

Sweet 16

Jack’s Generic Triathlon’s sweet 16 will begin at 7:30 a.m. The new distance for Jack’s Generic Tri, which was first held in 2003, will feature a 600m swim, 11.2-mile bike ride, and a 5K. The venue move from Lake Pflugerville, just north of Austin, will mark the first venue change for Jack’s Generic Tri in five years.

Must-Have Post-Race Treats

What are your go-to post-race treats when you’re done racing?

The 16th annual Jack’s Generic Tri takes place later this month (Aug. 26th). We asked the High Five Events crew about their favorite post-race treats.

Everyone has something they do/eat/drink/etc. after racing as a reward or tradition. That something could begin your recovery, ease the pain, or celebrate. If you’re strategic, your post-race treat incorporates all three! If you know the High Five Events staff, then you won’t be surprised to see a recurring theme below.

Highlight on Volunteers: Karen Underwood

The next winner of the High Five Events’ “Nomination Contest” is Karen Underwood. She has a sweet gift headed her way as a token of our appreciation.

Karen Underwood’s friend, Nancy Edmonds, nominated her and told us that Karen not only volunteers at most of the Texas Tri Series races, but she also races. That’s why you will usually see Karen at the end of events, such as Jack’s Generic Tri, helping the High Five Events crew break down the race sites. She’s even the bike lead for the Kids Fun Run at the Kerrville Triathlon Festival. What a commitment! That’s taking triathlon to the next level!

We had the chance to ask Karen some questions about her volunteerism. Even though she describes herself as a “behind-the-scenes” person, she is honored to receive this nomination. Volunteering really means a lot to her. In her words, it makes her “feel so good, inside and out!” Karen volunteers at races because it allows her to give back to triathlons, which have taught her that “there are no boundaries to potential.” She also likes helping other people achieve dreams and goals that they never thought were possible.

Mechanic’s Corner: Saddle Bag Essentials

What is a Saddle Bag and What do You Put In it

Saddle Bag Kit with Tire inflator, patches, and co2 inflator - what to do when you get a flatIf you’ve ever had a bike ride end early because of a flat tire or minor mechanical problem, then you already know the importance of carrying a saddle bag with you on your bike rides.  A saddle bag is a bag that is specifically designed to hang underneath the back of your bicycle seat. They come in a variety of sizes and styles so check for one that will fit comfortably on the back of your bike. Some people even have two different saddles bags, one for training rides and one for races.

At a minimum, that bag should have an inner tube, a patch kit, tire levers and a bicycle specific multi-tool in it. If you don’t know the size of your inner tube, check the sidewall of your tire for the size or ask your local bike shop which is best for your bike.

For A Flat Tire

If you’re not carrying a hand tire pump mounted somewhere on your bike, then a CO2 cartridge and inflator are also essential.  A flat tire can be fixed in under five minutes, and you can be back on your way if you have the tools and spare with you to fix it.  Otherwise, you’ll be calling a friend for a ride or maybe calling in late to work if you’re mid-commute when the flat tire happens.

For Other Mechanical Problems

Aside from a flat tire, a loose bolt that allows your handlebar to move or your seat to slip is a common problem that is easy to fix with a bicycle specific multi-tool.  A broken chain is a less common occurrence, but a chain tool is included on many multi-tools and is a necessity if you do get a broken chain while you’re out on a ride.
If you don’t know how to change an inner tube or use a CO2 inflator, you may want to talk to your mechanic or ask a friend to teach you how before your next long bike ride.  Finally, I recommend that you always have a cell phone, some cash and identification with you in case of an emergency.

Triathlon is that much more fun when you divide and conquer! Recruit friends, family, or co-workers and create your relay team for Jack’s Generic Triathlon. The 16th annual JGT will take place on Sunday, August 26th, at Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park. Relay teams can consist of two or three individuals. If your team has two members, one person will take two legs and the second person will take the third leg. This can be accomplished in any combination. Try something new

Maybe you know about triathlon, maybe you’re unfamiliar. Perhaps you’ve cheered and supported friends at their triathlons, but you’ve never participated in one. Creating a relay team is the best way to get introduced to the sport! Attempting something new can be a little overwhelming at times. Building a team of two or three will help take some of the pressure off. Train with your team, experience the highs and the lows, and get a taste of your new sport.

Have three times the fun

Of course you can always double your pleasure. But why do that when you can triple the fun?! That’s right, get two friends or co-workers and create your relay team. Next, come up with a sweet team name. While you’re training, you can have team tops made and begin planning what you’ll wear on race day. Will it be matching outfits or a hilarious swim-bike-run-friendly costume? So many choices!

You’re injured

Injuries happen. We all know that. But what may prevent you from running might not stop you from cycling or swimming. As long as you feel comfortable and aren’t in pain when training, creating a relay team for JGT is a fantastic way to stay active while continuing to strengthen your muscles. You never know, cross-training might just help speed up your recovery!

Experience something memorable

Get the old high school/college crew together. Build a family relay team that spans three generations. Create an all-sibling team. Represent your employer and become the talk of the office. Raise some serious dough for your favorite nonprofit. Whatever direction you go, make this something you won’t soon forget. Participate with loved ones and/or fundraise for an organization that’s close to your heart and your JGT experience will be stored in your long-term memory bank.

Run your heart out while your relay team members cheer you on!

You’re like Ricky Bobby: you just want to go fast. Triathlon is a trying sport, pushing your body’s limits. Training coupled with proper hydration and nutrition help keep your body going. But by the time the run starts your energy levels are decreasing, slowing you down. Try pushing the limits in another way, create a super team. Find someone who swims like a fish in the water. Add a member who gets speeding tickets on their bike for going too fast. Pick a runner whose feet seem to never touch the ground because of their speed. Assemble this super team and show up on race day ready to set land records (just watch out for the speed traps)!
