Beginner’s Guide to Triathlon Swimming

Don’t struggle through the first leg of your first triathlon by not being prepared for the swim portion. Use these beginner swimming tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years that will help improve your swim technique during your triathlon to help you hit the water with confidence.

Practice Your Breathing

Breathing comes naturally during the bike and run portions, but you need to practice this during your swim training to progress as a swimmer. As your body rotates back and forth, breathe out steadily when your head is underwater to get into a rhythm you are comfortable with. Practicing this will help ensure you are not out of breath at the end of the swim. Holding your breath will create a lot of tension in the upper body and restrict your arms during the swim.

Take Your Time

Use this time by yourself to work on technique and breathing to become comfortable in the water. Set yourself up for success on the morning of your upcoming tri by taking your time and easing into your swim sets. Think of it this way: quality over quantity.

Keep It Short and Sweet

You don’t need to do long, strenuous workouts to build your skill in the water. You also don’t want to wait too long in between each swim, you will lose the progress you’ve made on your technique. Ease into your swim training by not overwhelming yourself with long workouts. Stick to short, repetitive sets that will keep you feeling confident in the water. Manage what you can with your schedule, but your goal should be to hit the pool every other day.

Swim With Others

Once you feel comfortable with your own abilities in the water, get out and practice with other athletes to really get a feel for what you will experience on race day. A Master’s Swimming Program is always a great way to get with other athletes that share your goal of improving in the water. Use this time to get used to being close to other swimmers, while also counting your lengths to see what your pace will be like on race day. If you aren’t happy with your pace, adjust your pool training around that until you see the results you want!

Jack’s Generic Tri takes place at Lake Walter E. Long (aka Decker Lake) and spans 1,200 acres. JGT kicks off with a 600-meter swim in the lake. The bike course goes around the lake for 11.2 miles and features some rolling hills. The run is on a mix of off-road paths and paved roads. Then we meet back up at the finish line party for some fun!

Tips to Get Your Best Race Photos During Jack’s Generic Tri

We all want great shots of ourselves during the race to look back at and cherish later on, but we all know flattering race photos can be tricky. I, personally, find it challenging to get a good photo of myself regardless of what I’m doing, so you can bet a Facebook-worthy action-shot is even more of a challenge. However, with this list of tips and some self-awareness, you’ll be prepared to look your best in your Jack’s Generic Tri race photos. After the race, don’t forget to tag us @JacksGenericTri

Swim Portion

1. Think about your form

The photos that are captured in the water are obviously not going to show a whole lot of your face. What the photo will capture is your form in the water. If you know photographs are being taken, attempt to tighten up your form. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how awesome a mid-swim photo of yourself can be!

2. Be ready to Smile

As you are walking/running out of the water, you can count on one of our amazing photographers to be there to capture the moment. Pro tip: smile BIG! We love seeing our participants having a great time moving on to the next portion of the tri, and these are often some of the coolest photos we get from Jack’s Generic Tri!

1. Check your positioning

Bike photos are an awesome chance to get a great close-up race picture. However, no photo is worth losing control of your bike. We know everyone has their favorite riding position to be in when in the saddle. Rather than changing the position you’re comfortable with, simply give the photographer a smile or a thumbs up when you cruise past them! You’ll be very impressed at how they turn out. 

Run Portion

1.Position your bib Before

To make sure your personalized bib can be seen in your race photos, place it in the front-center of your race shirt/suit.  This is also important for the automated photosystems to use this to tag your photos. This way you don’t have to sift through thousands of photos to try and find yourself!

2. Stand Tall

After running for a while, we tend to let our shoulders fall forward. When you see the photographers up ahead, stand up a little taller! No matter how you feel on the inside, this is a sure way to make you look effortless during the run portion. 

3. Increase your stride

Elongate the appearance of your legs by lengthening your stride for a couple of steps! You don’t want to do this for the entire run portion of JGT, but it won’t hurt for a photo or three when you catch a glimpse of the camera (not to mention, you’ll love how long your legs will look in these photos)

4. Relax your face and think positive

We know, easier said than done, but start practicing now on your training runs. Make your cheeks soft and say the word “Money.” Give it a try in the mirror and see for yourself. Hopefully, you’ll already be smiling due to all the fun you’re having at JGT, but when you see a photographer ahead of you relax your face and enjoy yourself, and the pictures are bound to turn out fantastic!

5. Have fun!

Probably the most important piece of advice for your best race photos. If you’re having a good time, it’ll show in the pictures. The photographers are there to capture your accomplishments, so the most important thing to remember is to have fun! You’ll be able to look back at these photos forever, so it’s important to make the most out of your experience.

Z’Tejas to Host Jack’s Generic Tri Volunteers

Volunteering for Jack’s Generic Triathlon is anything but generic. You support hundreds of triathletes who’ve spent countless hours training. This is a great way to give back to the sport you love and get a front-row seat to watching friends and family. Then, we’ll celebrate your efforts at Z’Tejas (1110 W. 6th St. – date/time TBD) for the official volunteer party! We’re getting excited right now just thinking about their scrumptious southwestern food and delicious drinks.

If you’re participating on Sunday, Aug. 25th, you can volunteer before race day. Not participating in the event? Lend your time and energy to hundreds of triathletes! There are early morning shifts, opportunities during the race, and time slots during breakdown if you’re not an -early birds. Sign up for a shift during the event if you want to be right in the action where you can cheer and volunteer.

Race-day volunteers are fed and hydrated. There are snacks and cold drinks throughout the day. If you’re there in the morning you’ll get breakfast tacos and coffee! In addition to all of the above, volunteers get a sweet, custom shirt.

Don’t forget: this is event #3 of the Texas Tri Series. You’ve volunteered or participated in Rookie Triathlon and CapTex Tri. Once you complete JGT, Kerrville Triathlon is the only event left on your calendar!

Highlight on Volunteers: Karen Underwood

The next winner of the High Five Events’ “Nomination Contest” is Karen Underwood. She has a sweet gift headed her way as a token of our appreciation.

Karen Underwood’s friend, Nancy Edmonds, nominated her and told us that Karen not only volunteers at most of the Texas Tri Series races, but she also races. That’s why you will usually see Karen at the end of events, such as Jack’s Generic Tri, helping the High Five Events crew break down the race sites. She’s even the bike lead for the Kids Fun Run at the Kerrville Triathlon Festival. What a commitment! That’s taking triathlon to the next level!

We had the chance to ask Karen some questions about her volunteerism. Even though she describes herself as a “behind-the-scenes” person, she is honored to receive this nomination. Volunteering really means a lot to her. In her words, it makes her “feel so good, inside and out!” Karen volunteers at races because it allows her to give back to triathlons, which have taught her that “there are no boundaries to potential.” She also likes helping other people achieve dreams and goals that they never thought were possible.

What the Heck Is a Basno Badge & How Do I Get One?

What is a Basno Badge?

Jack’s Generic Tri uses Basno, a badge management system, to distribute and host digital badges. Collect as many as you can to track your history of accomplishments. It’s like a trophy cabinet without having to dust!

At Jack’s Generic Tri, not only do you get an actual finisher medal, but you can also receive an In-Training and a Finisher Basno Badge.

Digital badges are awarded to participants who successfully complete Jack’s Generic Tri or other High Five Events’ events. In addition, if you register early enough, you’ll also receive an “In Training” badge. Make sure you let your friends and loved ones know about your upcoming goal.
